Starfish "Patriotus Americus"

When I introduced my green starfish, I said that I couldn't find out his name and country of origin. Well, I definitely know where this one resides. This one is from the Alabama Gulf Coast. I'm sure he would migrate to other parts of the United States if the natural conditions which he requires were present. You know, like warm gulf waters. I have heard they might be present on the gulf side of Florida as well as in Georgia, Mississippi and Louisiana. I know they are on the Texas coast.

I wonder how many other countries have their own "special" starfish. I think there are probably other American starfish that need to be presented here as well. Maybe some of you have sighted them and have pictures to show us.

I honor of our Memorial Day this weekend, my little friend has been reproduced in size 80 hand dyed thread called "Patriotic" made by Lady Shuttle Maker who is now in Korea. He will be going to live with a dear friend tomorrow. I know she will take better care of him than anyone. She is the most outwardly patriotic person I know and they belong together!

Please let me know if you see any other starfish like this one or in other varieties. In my opinion, the starfish needs greater exposure to the world.

I love it Laura. You will have to put a pin on this one and wear it, maybe Sunday ok. Madeline

Three cheers for the red, white, and blue! I love "Patriotus Americus"! He must have at least 49 brothers somewhere...

Thanks Madeline. I don't know if I will have it with me tomorrow as I am giving it to a friend!

You are so good with words. The name suits it very well, and beautiful colours too.

Hi Diane. I agree that he must have at least 49 brothers somewhere even if they have to live far from their home states in order to be in the water! I hope others will help us unite this family. What do you know about the Illinois Starfish?
Thanks Jon. I used to write a column for a local paper, but I can't do that anymore due to the migraines. I miss it!

Good afternoon, Laura! What a proud starfish he is. I just know his Michigander brother is hanging around here somewhere. ;)

Thank you Clyde, TattingChic and Steph.
I would love to see a Michigander starfish! Please do send a picture when you find him.

Size 80 and with beads too?? Can you post a picture of this next to a quarter or something? People need to understand how delicate this is.
Glad to see this thread being put to such creative use!

I believe the Illinois starfish is purple and red (state flower - violet, state bird - cardinal). I know... very gaudy! But, the combination works for the red hat ladies!

Thanks for suggesting the quarter pictures Sherry. I just didn't think of it.
Diane, I hope an Illinois starfish is soon to make an appearance. Maybe the red hats would like him as a mascot!
