More Woodcarvings

I was afraid you would all think I had died or something! I've been working on a "secret project" that is now finished! (Still a secret!)

Here are some more pictures of my woodcarving days. The one of the shore birds is just woodburning, but I like the way it looks. The bulldog cane is my husband's. He got his master's degree from Samford University and they are the bulldogs. The crepe myrtle is carved from wood cut from my yard. We trimmed the crepe myrtles back and saved every piece of wood that we could carve or turn on the wood lathe. We coated each piece with sand and sealer, (can and brush, not spray.) Let them sit for a couple of days and then started carving. They had to be carved green as they are so hard when they dry that a knife won't cut them.

I hope you enjoy the pictures. Maybe some tatting soon.

Wow! is right! You are so talented, Laura. Wood carving must be a lot of work.

Wow, wow and more wow!! the woodcarvings are superb. I have a wodburning thingy! too but never did much. Wood turning I would love to do.

I so envy you the crepe myrtles, I have one as a bonsai but it has never flowered. It's just that little bit too cold here in the winter but if i put it in the greenhouse it will surely die!

Thanks Sherry. Now, it wouldn't be a secret if I told. Besides, I've been "sworn" to secrecy!
Thank you Yarnplayer. Yes it is work, but no more than what you and Sherry do.
Thanks Clyde. I wish I had more crepe myrtle cut to carve on. The secret will be out soon enough I hope.
Thank you Pamela. When it gets cold I might have to venture back out to the woodworking shop and see if I've still "got it." I'm sorry you can't get your crepe myrtle to flower. I love them so much. Some of the ones I have now came from my grandmother's house in 1967 when the freeway came through and they forced us to move. The watermelon color has always been my favorite but the others are starting to grow on me. In fact, I think the different colors would make a lovely HDT! Hint, hint!

Thank you Jane. I stopped one to early. Sorry. And I envy your design talent. Does that make us even? Wish I could tell you what I've been up to!

What beautiful pieces! I've thought of learning wood carving... there are so many possibilities! Of course, I'd also like to learn scrimshaw, and I've been thinking of that for about 30 years! I'm glad you're willing to share pictures of your beautiful pieces!

Wow! from me too. You are so talented with your hands. I am sure they look better seeing in person. I like things carved in wood but I don't know anything about turning a block into something exquisite like what you have done. Excellent work.

Laura, you do lovely work.
I can not wait to know what the secret is because I am sure it is tatting related.

Oh My! Are they beautiful or what! These are wonderful and brilliant pieces of art... you are extremely talented.

I always thought it is a difficult job to carve, coz it is very intricate and everything, but kudos to you… they are cool

Thank you Diane. We are so much alike - we want to do everything we see! Maybe some day you will.
Thanks Jon. It is just something that I inherited from my dad. I am proud of my carvings, but Daddy was a master carver of extraordinary talent.
Thank you Sapna. I'm glad you like them so much. It really isn't difficult. You just ask the piece of wood what it wants to be. Then you cut away everything that isn't that which it wanted to be!!!!!
