New Doily Design in Thought Process

I'm thinking about a doily designed around my Easter Egg/Ferris Wheel snowflake. I've never designed a doily before, but I keep rolling this around in my head and making sketches with my pencil.

I'm almost finished with my third spinning wheel glass mat. However, I noticed this afternoon that somehow one of the picots on the outer edge is cut. It has been a long time since I've done that. I had made a mistake and had to cut some out and tie in new threads. I must have done it during that process. It is size 80 thread and I refuse to cut it out and try to patch. I think I will use some glue starch and try to hole it together. Or maybe "fray stop?"

I'll be shipping out thread winders Wednesday or Thursday. I will also ship Maureen's snowflake that she won.

Happy Tatting!

I'm sure your doily will turn out beautiful when it is finished. You have some lovely designs.
What a bummer about cutting the picot on the finished piece you just did! "Fray Check" may just be your best bet. I don't know, I'd put a drop on a piece of paper and pick up a fraction of that drop on the tip of a pin to apply it. A little bit goes a very long way and if you use much more than that the absorbant threads will probably soak it up and before you know it the whole portion can be stiffened in a most undesirable manner.
You probably already knew that tho'!

Go with the idea of designing a doily. I am sure you would come up with a nice one.

Thank you for the encouragement Lady Shuttle Maker and Clyde. You both design such beautiful doilies. Your faith in me helps me to have faith in myself!
Thanks for the tips Tattingchic. I hadn't thought about putting the Fray Check on paper and using a pin. I'll be careful. The problem I am having is that the piece isn't finished. I have two more arms to go and I'm worried about it pulling out. Guess I'll wait til I get the fray check on before I finish it. I bet I can find something else to do!

Laura, one thing that I find that really works well for things like a cut picot is a drop of crazy glue. Just be sure it is touching nothing else and it dries real fast and does not change the colour of the thread.

No word of a lie but if you have used tatting thread and the cut is clean then the picot will not come undone. That's the beauty of tatting is that it will not unravel. I've cut picots by accident and I've also frayed picots on purpose and its harder than you would think. The thread is twisted so tight it doesn't fray very easily. I also have a well used 50 year ago doily that had a knot come undone and its never frayed any further.

Thank you for the crazy glue tip Clyde. I can't find my "Fray Check". I'll give it a try.
Thank you too Victats. I hope I will have as much luck with mine not unraveling as you have. This one is cut almost to the double stitches.
